Folding@Home - Join Team Castaways: Let your computer do the fighting! Are you one of the thousands of people that leave their computer running at night? Or do you own a Sony PlayStation 3? Do you want to help cure cancer in your own home?? The Smarty-McSmartys at Stanford University are doing research into protein folding (click the link to find out the Wiki-details). Basically, you download a program to your computer or PS3, and when you're not using your machine, the program crunches numbers for the scientists. Using a method called 'distributed computing' thousands of others are crunching at the same time... resulting in the world's fastest and most powerful computational machine ever conceived (3.17 PetaFLOPS!!! - that's about 3 quadrillion floating point operations per second, or quite a few thousand times more powerful than your computer alone). All this to crack the mysteries of diseases like Alzheimer's, Mad Cow, Huntington's, Parkinson's, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
To Learn More and Download Folding@home: Once you download and kick off the program, under 'identity' join team CastawaysAgainstCancer (Team #:148630). PS... for you 'Terminator' fans, Skynet only ran at 60 TerraFLOPS |

On Friday, August 22nd, the Castaways Against Cancer were honored at the 2008 American Cancer Society Relay For Life Summit in Orlando, Florida.
Castaways Patrick and Greg attended as keynote speakers and the 2007 Die Another Day video was presented for an audience of Relay Chairs and other
professionals. Patrick writes: "There were about 700-people in the room at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando. They opened the general session at about 8:30am with their MC doing a presentation on fundraising. He then segued into our video... the lights went down... and our video was blasted onto two huge screens. At the end, there was loud applause. The MC said something like, "Well, we wonder how these guys do what they do... but we don't have to wonder anymore... the Castaways are here!" With that, Greg and I walked onstage in our denim shirts, carrying a couple of paddles -- and we got a standing ovation. Very cool. Then the MC did a simple Q-and-A with us for about five minutes. We told our story, told a couple of jokes and gave a shout-out to Carrie and the Lower Keys Chapter. It was very cool for that many folks to recognize us for our success -- and to have that opportunity to share our story." Well done boys! |

Man Overboard!!Bad news from fellow Castaway Anthony Berger... "It’s with mixed emotions that I have to pull out of the trip and for at least the next several years. As many of us paddle for family members it’s for this reason that I choose to pull out for now. With my work responsibilities I don’t get a lot of time at home and I travel frequently leaving my wife and kids at home." - He-BrewWe understand, buddy. We'll miss you! |

We did it!! The Castaways survived another adventure in the Florida Keys!! Our most sincere thanks to each of you that made this trip possible, and such an excellent success. Patrick was able to join the boys at the halfway point after a happy resolution with his emergency at home. Stay tuned for pictures and the trip report!! |

Planning is well underway for our next adventure! Yet, there has been a small bump on the water. Our sponsor from last year, The Yellowtail Inn on Grassy Key, after agreeing in January to help us again this year called last week us to inform they were withdrawing their support. We understand that our sponsors cannot always support our cause, but the manner in which our reservation was cancelled was quite shocking. Quite rudely, an employee by the name of Mike explained that, "we're in the business to make money". Well, to you Mike, and to the owners of the Yellowtail Inn and Bonefish resort: We are the Castaways Against Cancer. And we're in the business of saving lives. Thank you for your support in 2007. Next time... a simple, "Sorry, we can't", would have sufficed. |

Happy Thanksgiving! Best Wishes from the Castaways Against Cancer. Today is a day to reflect on all of which we are thankful. We thank you all for the wonderful support given to us over the years. "Thanksgiving Day comes, by statute, once a year; to the honest man it comes as frequently as the heart of gratitude will allow." - Edward Sandford Martin "Thanksgiving puts steel into our patriotic veins. It reminds us or our great heritage. It carries us back with numbing nostalgia to that first dreadful winter at Plymouth where less than half the handful of people survived. It speaks in clear, crisp tones of forgotten terms, like: integrity...bravery... respect...faith...vigilance...dignity...honor...freedom...discipline...sacrifice...godliness." - Charles R. Swindoll |

| As the Castaways Against Cancer approach their 7th-annual launch date, OB's annual pre-trip routine is underway. The television is now tuned to The Weather Channel... 24-7. His daughter is not allowed to watch cartoons and his wife can't even watch the news. OB is glued to the set, searching for any blip on the radar screen that could indicate a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a waterspout or proof of the Bermuda Triangle. During the commercial breaks, he's packing, unpacking and repacking all of his gear and drilling holes in his toothbrush. This exercise is an effort to keep his kayak as light as possible. On the morning of launch, he will be awake at 3am... the Weather Channel will be blasting and the packing exercises will continue... and inevitably at some point on the trip... he will complain he brought too much stuff. |

| Where, oh where, is the Castaways toilet seat? Thanks to the handy-work of team webmaster and sauce maker Jeff Croucher, the Castaways Against Cancer added their (skid) mark to the upper Keys last summer. Hauling a 6-foot long PVC pipe and a painted toilet seat over 40-miles, the Castaways installed their masterpiece among the other toilet seats that line a neighborhood channel on the bay side of Plantation Key. Since last year's adventure though, several big storms have blown through: Katrina and Wilma just to name a few. So, the question is: did the toilet seat survive... or was it flushed out to sea? |

| After battling cancer himself, one of the founding members of the Castaways Against Cancer is making a triumphant return to the kayak trip. Bob Linfors, the team's long-time navigator, was diagnosed in early '05 with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He underwent chemo for much of the year, missing the team's 6th-annual adventure in July '05. Since then, he's wrapped up treatment, regrown his hair, regained his physical strength and is returning to his kayak seat this summer. We are overjoyed to have Bob -- back on the boat! |
