Team Role/Function: Meeting Coordinator
How did you become a Castaway? I walked up to the CAC tent at the annual Columbus Pig Roast and asked how I could volunteer. And like they say, the rest is history.
Why are you a Castaway? The term CANCER became a part of my life when my mother was diagnosed with colon cancer and would later pass away from ovarian cancer. In 2020, in the midst of Covid-19, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am happy to say that I am in remission. I want to be a part of something that is actively doing something to find a cure.
Outside a kayak/bicycle, what is your "essential" gear? The code to the warehouse to get supplies needed for events and meeting.
My Family: I've been married to my loving and supportive husband, Manny, for 20 years this September. Together we have two wonderful teenage boys, Nick and Felix, who keep our lives busy and interesting.
Where are you from? Sunny South Florida!
Where'd you go to school? Southwest Senior High: Home of the Eagles! Florida International University. Let's Go PANTHERS!
Where do you work? I was an elementary classroom teacher for over 20 years. I am currently the Math Coach at Seminole Elementary School. But let's be real, as public educators we wear MANY hats.
Favorite music/artists: 80's music, of course!
Favorite movies/genre: I love watching comedies. Although I can't think of a favorite movie, I can definitely say that my favorite sitcom of ALL time is F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
Favorite books: I used to be an avid reader of romance novels. But I honestly haven't picked up a book in ages.
Personal Fun Fact: I LOVE cats! My husband has limited me to 2. LOL.
How have I helped carry out the CAC mission of funding cancer research and honoring those who have fought the fight? My main goal is to spread the word of how Castaways Against Cancer are making strides in providing much-needed funds into Cancer Research that is getting us closer to a cure.
